Employers regularly have this idea that they need to save money on the cost of labor to decrease their bottom line. This usually comes about when there has been some quarterly meeting about what the company can do to increase profits. Rather than coming up with anything new, some bright-eyed manager will boldly propose that the company reduce the cost of labor—thinking themselves to be the first to ever do so, making them, therefore, a business genius.
To be fair, reducing the cost of labor is often a glaringly obvious solution, with labor making up most of the cost of operation in several industries. For example, in the food service industry… Where big-name corporate players ruthlessly push labor percentages that scrape the bottom of theoretical possibility, often relying on the constant-state-of-permanent-stress of their workers and unaccounted overtime hours of their salaried managers to achieve what should be impossible numbers.
Of course, when the impossible is pushed too far, things start falling to the wayside with unfinished tasks piling up, eventually causing vulnerabilities to the business that, without proper resolution, could end up costing the company more than they ever thought possible.
This worker shared their story of this, with their manager deciding to cut their hours in order to save on their cost of labor—which meant that their tasks simply went unfinished. The lesson to be learned here is that if you're ever given an order that you know will go sideways… always get it in writing whenever it can be managed.
